Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode will contain ‘hundreds of missions’

Perhaps seeking to get the Switch 2 conversation back into positive territory, Nintendo offered a more detailed look at the console’s flagship launch game – Mario Kart World on Thursday.

In a brief Nintendo Direct showcase, the gaming giant showed off 15 minutes of gameplay, showcasing new courses, delving into the various game modes, on-track items, and playable characters.

However, the most interesting element to us was the delve into Switch 2 game’s Free Roam mode – the off piste mode the company us using to differentiate this game from its predecessors.

We already knew it was an open world mode enabling users to drive between races and “go wherever you like” but today Nintendo went into more detail.

Nintendo says you can “hit hundreds of P Switches you find across the world to start missions By completing them you can hone your driving ability outside of races.

“Explore panoramic vistas, go (way) off-road, see the seas and find secrets like hidden coins, or hit P Switches to take on hundreds of missions that can help improve your driving skills outside of races,” the company said.

Nintendo showcased one mission where gamers were tasked with collecting blue coins on a slackline course.

Furthermore, Nintendo says the free roaming modes will be laden with hidden coins, hidden panels and more, with the company advising you to take the scenic route.

Opinion

Nintendo needed something to restore the good vibes around the Switch 2 after all this negative talk around pricing and tariffs. Seeing Mario Kart shine in the showcase has done just that. I challenge you to watch this and not start searching for pre-order stock.
