Apple’s iPhone 17 Air could feature a limited A19 Pro chip – does it matter?

Apple’s iPhone 17 Air is rumoured to feature the A19 Pro chip; however, it might not be the same version used in the higher-end iPhone 17 Pro models. Let us explain.

A report from Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo (via MacRumors) claims the iPhone 17 Air will have a slightly less powerful 5-core GPU compared to the 6-core GPU in the Pro models.

That would likely mean slightly slower graphics performance when it comes to gaming, although we’d need to properly compare the two to see whether this would even be noticeable in everyday use.

That’s a little at odds with what we’ve heard from analysts so far. Often reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted the iPhone 17 Air would run on an A19 chip – the standard version, rather than one with the ‘Pro’ moniker, but this latest report suggests otherwise.

The iPhone 17 range is starting to take shape

If we use previous iPhones as a guide, the iPhone 17 line-up would likely run on an A19 chip for the base model. While the Pro and Pro Max models would have the A19 Pro chip.

The iPhone 17 Air is harder to predict, as it’s a completely new device for Apple that’ll most likely replace the ‘Plus’ models. Rumours have so far suggested the phone could be very thin and straddle the cheaper iPhone 17 and pricier 17 Pro.

The iPhone 17 is likely to arrive in September, and while we’re still a few months away from that, we’re starting to hear more about what to expect. The base model is said to have a 6.3-inch display that incorporates a 120Hz display for the first on a none Pro iPhone. The iPhone 17 Air is reported to have a single camera on the rear, similar to the iPhone 16e.

Of course, none of this is confirmed until Apple tells us more.
