Whether you like it or not, Microsoft is continuing to steam ahead with its AI rollout by forcing the the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices that already have Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or other 365 apps.
According to Bleeping Computer, the automatic installations begin in October 2025 and will be finished by mid-November, with the European Economic Area (EEA) being the only region exempt from the update.
What the Copilot app does
The Copilot app works as a central hub for Microsoft’s AI tools across its productivity suite. It’s designed to give you quick access to features like writing suggestions in Word, smarter data handling in Excel, and presentation polish in PowerPoint. The idea is convenience – placing AI at the heart of everyday tasks.
If you’ve been following Microsoft’s strategy, this move feels like the next logical step after introducing Copilot Mode in Microsoft Edge and the recent price hike for Microsoft 365 subscriptions. It also ties into the company’s bigger AI push, which includes major investment in OpenAI.
Why this could be a problem for users
The sticking point is that personal users don’t get a choice. Unless you’re managing an organisation through the Microsoft 365 Apps admin centre, you can’t opt out of this installation. For most people, Copilot will appear on their PCs whether they want it or not. The only workaround is disabling it through Windows Startup or skipping Microsoft 365 entirely.
For those who already lean on AI tools, the app could be genuinely useful. But for others, it risks feeling like another piece of bloatware eating up system resources. Microsoft has run into this perception before, and forcing the install may frustrate users who prefer control over what runs on their PC.
If you’re curious about what this future looks like, it’s worth noting that Windows 11 already integrates Copilot at the OS level, giving a preview of what’s to come across Microsoft’s ecosystem.
Opinion
I’m not sure I like this move from Microsoft. If Copilot is really that good, give people the option to install it themselves – don’t force it on them. I want the choice of what runs on my PC and when.
