WhatsApp is testing an app everyone has been clamouring for

WhatsApp has finally started testing an official companion app for the Apple Watch, a move that users have been waiting on for years.

According to WABetaInfo, the app is now available via TestFlight for those running beta version 25.32.10.71 of WhatsApp for iOS.

Once installed, it lets Apple Watch users view messages and media, send new messages without waiting for a notification, and react to messages using emojis directly from their wrist.

Voice control is also part of the experience. You can dictate or send audio messages using the Watch’s microphone. However, this isn’t a fully standalone app just yet. The Apple Watch still needs to be paired with an iPhone that has WhatsApp installed for everything to work.

Even so, it’s a big step forward for Apple users who’ve had to rely on basic notification replies or third-party apps to manage WhatsApp chats  – a far cry from what Telegram or Messages offer on the wearable. This companion app changes that, finally giving users a taste of the convenience they have been asking for.

The TestFlight version is currently limited, and there’s no word yet on a public App Store launch, but the signs point to WhatsApp expanding its smartwatch presence soon. For now, we are hopeful that this companion app will evolve into a fully standalone experience.

WhatsApp also recently announced that it was adding the ability for users on iOS and Android to secure their message backups using passkeys, removing the need for passwords.
