WhatsApp has officially arrived on the Apple Watch – and this time, it’s not just notifications.
The long-awaited WhatsApp for Apple Watch app is now rolling out to all users, following a brief beta period last week. It finally gives Apple Watch owners the ability to read and reply to chats, send voice messages, react with emojis, and even view media, all without pulling out their iPhone.
That means if someone calls you on WhatsApp, you’ll see it on your wrist. You can read full messages, even long ones, directly from the Watch display, type out or dictate replies, and record quick voice notes when typing isn’t ideal. There’s also support for emoji reactions, stickers, and a more refined media-viewing experience, so photos and previews look clearer on the watch’s smaller screen.
WhatsApp says users will even be able to scroll through their chat history, offering more context in ongoing conversations – a feature that was previously missing from third-party workarounds.
As always, end-to-end encryption applies, keeping all messages and calls private. The app works on any Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer, and requires a connected iPhone with the latest WhatsApp update installed.
However, early reactions to the launch have been mixed.
Some users called the launch “a welcome development,” especially for those who’ve been stuck using Meta’s messaging platform for years.
But several early adopters say the app still falls short of true independence. “It only works if your iPhone is connected… it would’ve been useful for chatting when you don’t have your phone with you.” Another added that this makes it feel “completely pointless,” since message notifications were already available before.
Meta describes this release as “just the start,” with plans to refine and expand the experience based on user feedback.
It’s a small but meaningful upgrade for WhatsApp’s 2 billion users, especially for those who prefer to leave their phone in a bag or pocket but still want to stay connected. But until the watch app truly stands alone, you’ll still need your iPhone nearby.
