Power banks keep getting slimmer and more powerful, but safety has increasingly become the limiting factor, especially as airlines and regulators crack down on conventional lithium batteries.
Debuted at CES 2026, BMX’s new range of portable battery packs uses semi-solid-state battery technology to improve thermal stability and enable thinner designs than conventional lithium-ion power banks.
The new lineup is led by the SolidSafe Air series, which replaces the liquid electrolyte found in standard lithium batteries with a semi-solid-state structure designed to be more stable under stress.
BMX says this approach significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway, the chain reaction that can cause batteries to overheat or catch fire when damaged, overcharged or exposed to high temperatures.
Rather than chasing extreme capacities, the SolidSafe Air packs focus on everyday portability, with designs thin enough to slip into a pocket or bag without the bulk typically associated with high-capacity power banks.
The solid-state-inspired construction also allows the batteries to maintain their shape over time, avoiding the gradual swelling that can affect older lithium power banks after repeated charge cycles.
Charging is handled via USB-C, with support for fast-charging standards designed to work safely within the tighter thermal limits of compact devices.
BMX positions the SolidSafe Air range as particularly well suited for frequent travellers, highlighting improved safety margins alongside compliance with airline carry-on requirements.
The company also points to improved longevity, with the solid-state structure designed to retain capacity across more charge cycles compared to conventional lithium-ion cells.
While fully solid-state batteries remain expensive and difficult to mass-produce, BMX’s semi-solid-state approach appears to be a more practical middle ground that delivers many of the safety benefits without the cost barriers.
This makes the SolidSafe Air series one of the more realistic examples of solid-state battery technology making its way into consumer accessories rather than remaining confined to labs or concept devices.
BMX has not yet confirmed global pricing or availability, but the SolidSafe Air power banks are expected to roll out across multiple markets later in 2026.
If the claims around safety, longevity and slim design hold up in real-world use, BMX’s approach could signal a broader shift in how portable power is built as the industry looks beyond traditional lithium-ion cells.
