Google details AI-powered Gmail experience rolling out now

Google has outlined a major update to Gmail that introduces AI-powered search, writing tools, and a new AI Inbox view, as the company looks to reshape how users interact with their email.

The changes are rolling out starting today and target Gmail’s more than three billion monthly active users, with features designed to surface information faster without requiring users to manually open or search through emails.

At the centre of the update is AI Overviews for Gmail search, which mirrors the AI summaries already appearing on Google.com.

Instead of relying on keywords, users can now ask questions in natural language directly from the Gmail search bar and receive AI-generated answers drawn from their inbox.

Google says users can ask questions such as identifying a service provider from a past email, with Gemini scanning threads and summarising the relevant details instantly.

The existing search results still load alongside the AI response, allowing users to verify information and jump into original email threads if needed.

AI Overviews in Gmail search are rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while AI summaries that appear inside email threads are becoming available to all users.

AI Inbox and smarter writing tools

Google is also introducing AI Inbox, a new inbox view that sits alongside the traditional Inbox and appears with a sparkle icon in the Gmail sidebar on the web.

The AI Inbox is designed to provide a personalised snapshot of what matters most, including a greeting that shows message counts and the last refresh time.

The first section highlights suggested to-dos such as bills, reminders, and short-term tasks, with Gmail clearly indicating required actions and linking back to the source emails.

A second section surfaces topics to catch up on, grouping related messages and presenting key points in bullet-style summaries rather than individual emails.

Google says the goal is to help users focus on information and actions rather than scanning long message lists.

Alongside inbox changes, Gmail is gaining a new AI-powered Proofread feature that performs advanced checks on grammar, tone, clarity, and structure.

The tool goes beyond basic spell checking and can suggest simplifying sentences, and is launching on the web for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

All new features are powered by Gemini 3, with Google stressing that personal Workspace content is not used to train its AI models.

Google says the system runs inside a dedicated engineered privacy environment, and users can disable AI features at any time through smart feature controls.

AI Inbox will first be available to Trusted Testers, with broader rollout planned in the coming months.
