Google has unveiled a new experimental feature called Personal Intelligence that allows Gemini to draw deeper context from your data, marking a significant shift toward more personalised AI assistance.
Rolling out first in the Gemini app in the US, the opt-in feature lets Google’s AI connect information across services such as Gmail, Google Photos, Search and YouTube History to deliver responses tailored to individual habits, preferences and past activity.
Google describes Personal Intelligence as a move beyond generic AI answers, with Gemini now able to “connect the dots” across a user’s Google ecosystem rather than relying solely on prompts and keywords.
Personal Intelligence makes Gemini more useful
With explicit user permission, Gemini can analyse data from multiple apps to better understand what a user is asking for and why, allowing it to surface more relevant and useful suggestions.
For example, asking for travel ideas in a specific city may prompt Gemini to reference past bookings found in Gmail alongside interests inferred from Photos, such as landscape or nature photography, to suggest destinations that better match personal tastes.
In another scenario, Gemini can use information stored in emails, such as insurance documents, to identify details like a specific car model when making shopping recommendations, reducing the need for manual follow-up questions.

Google says this capability is powered by Gemini 3, which allows the AI to reason across different data sources rather than simply retrieving information from individual apps.
While Gemini has previously been able to access content from Google services, Personal Intelligence enables it to understand context across that data without users needing to specify where the information lives.
Personal Intelligence is turned off by default and requires users to explicitly opt in before any app connections are made, with Google emphasising that personalisation is only applied when the system determines it will be genuinely helpful.
Users can choose which apps to connect and can disable personalisation for individual responses, while also managing or deleting past Gemini chats at any time.
Google also stresses that personal Workspace accounts are excluded from the initial rollout, with the beta limited to personal Google accounts rather than business, enterprise or education users.
The feature is rolling out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US from January 14, with support across web, Android and iOS once enabled.
Google says Personal Intelligence will expand to more countries, the free tier, and Search’s AI Mode in the future, positioning the update as an early step toward AI systems that adapt to users rather than treating everyone the same.
For now, the announcement signals Google’s intent to make Gemini less of a general chatbot and more of a personal assistant shaped by the data people already trust Google to manage.
