It was always going to happen: somebody’s Galaxy TriFold has broken

Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold was always going to raise questions about durability, and it didn’t take long for one of those fears to turn into reality.

An early buyer has reported that their TriFold’s display has already failed, despite the device being just a month old.

According to a post on Samsung’s own forums, the user noticed a line of dead and failing pixels running across the left-most section of the foldable display.

There’s a clearly visible patch near the top where the panel has gone completely dark, with a white line of malfunctioning pixels extending below it. The owner says there was “no external shock at all,” suggesting the damage appeared spontaneously.

That immediately raises an awkward question: what happens next? At the moment, Samsung doesn’t offer dedicated insurance for the Galaxy Z TriFold. Instead, buyers get a one-time perk that covers 50% off a display replacement.

Even with that discount, the repair reportedly comes in at around 1.3 million won, which works out to just under $900 — a steep bill for a device this new. In theory, a fault like this should fall under warranty, but that’s not something Samsung has publicly clarified yet.

Still, this kind of issue isn’t exactly shocking. Foldables have come a long way, but they’re not immune to display failures. Even past Samsung devices have had similar problems — including the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which famously developed a spontaneous crack in a review unit while not in use.

Those incidents have become rarer with newer designs, but the TriFold is a first-generation product, and that usually means early adopters are also durability testers.

The TriFold’s ambitious three-panel folding design adds even more complexity than Samsung’s existing foldables. More hinges, more moving parts, and more stress on the display were always going to increase the risk of something going wrong.

This early failure reinforces a familiar piece of advice: foldables are still best bought with insurance. Until Samsung rolls out broader protection for the Galaxy Z TriFold, especially as it reaches more markets, buyers should probably expect a few more stories like this to surface.

With cutting-edge designs, impressive engineering, and premium price tags, early hiccups were always part of the deal.
