Apple could be going all-in on subscription app bundles

Apple may be laying the groundwork for a much bigger push into subscription bundles across its software lineup.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is actively looking at “all areas of its software and services” for new monetisation opportunities. Last month’s launch of Apple Creator Studio could be just the beginning.

Creator Studio bundles together advanced tools for apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. On paper it’s not a bad deal for power users. The bigger shift, though, is what it represents. Apple is now comfortable placing paid features and upsell prompts inside apps that were previously free, including Pages, Keynote and Numbers. That’s a notable change for a company that has long marketed its software as a no-strings-attached bonus to owning Apple hardware.

If Apple does lean harder into subscription bundles, it wouldn’t be starting from scratch. Apple One has proven popular by packaging Music, TV+, Arcade and iCloud storage into a single, relatively good-value plan. Gurman’s reporting suggests Apple may want to replicate that success elsewhere – especially as AI features become more expensive to run.

Creator Studio already relies on OpenAI-powered image and presentation tools. There are persistent rumours of an AI-focused Apple Health+ service in the works. From Apple’s perspective, charging for these capabilities could help offset infrastructure costs. Additionally, it could create new recurring revenue streams.

Still, there’s a fine line between optional upgrades and overreach. Some features now locked behind Creator Studio – such as enhanced image generation in Pages and Keynote, or Magic Fill in Numbers – feel like the kind of ecosystem perks Apple previously rolled out for free.

Many users have already accepted ongoing payments in other areas. iCloud storage upgrades are now commonplace, especially since Apple’s free 5GB tier hasn’t changed since 2011. If Apple frames future bundles carefully – and keeps the best ones genuinely good value — it may find customers willing to pay.

For now, Creator Studio looks less like a one-off and more like a sign of things to come.
