The iPhone Fold will apparently have the biggest iPhone battery yet

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone could come with a seriously chunky battery — potentially the largest ever fitted to an iPhone.

According to a new leak, the so-called iPhone Fold is testing battery capacities starting at 5,500mAh. This comfortably eclipses anything in Apple’s current lineup.

The claim comes from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who says Apple is working with batteries rated at 5500mAh or higher. That’s slightly above earlier reports suggesting a 5,400mAh cell. Additionally, the wording implies this may just be the baseline rather than the final figure.

To put that into context, today’s biggest iPhone battery belongs to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It reportedly sits at 5,088mAh. The rest of the iPhone 17 range falls well below that. For example, the standard iPhone 17 is at 3,692mAh and the iPhone Air is even lower. If the Fold really does break past 5,500mAh, it would be a notable jump. That’s roughly 10% larger than Apple’s current battery champ.

Of course, raw capacity doesn’t tell the whole story. A foldable iPhone is expected to have a much larger display than any existing model. This could eat into those gains. How Apple balances power draw across a flexible screen, two display modes, and whatever multitasking features come with it will matter just as much as battery size on paper.

Still, the direction makes sense. Foldables are typically battery-hungry devices, and Apple will be keen to avoid launching a premium new form factor that struggles to last a full day. Therefore, a larger battery could help the iPhone Fold keep pace — or even outperform — upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models when it comes to endurance.

It’s also worth remembering that Apple tends to prioritise efficiency over headline numbers. If the iPhone Fold pairs this larger battery with Apple’s usual software optimisation and next-gen silicon, battery life could end up being one of its biggest selling points. Therefore, it may be a strength rather than a compromise.

For now, this remains firmly in rumour territory. Apple hasn’t acknowledged the iPhone Fold publicly. We’re still a way off seeing how its design and display will actually look. But if these battery leaks hold up, one thing’s clear: Apple isn’t planning to go small when it finally enters the foldable phone race.
