Apple may be about to quietly refresh its iPhone lineup.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPhone 17e could arrive imminently – potentially within days.
This suggests a low-key launch rather than a full-blown event.
If the latest leak is accurate, the good news is that Apple isn’t planning to raise prices. The iPhone 17e is tipped to start at $599 in the US, which would match last year’s model.
Assuming Apple sticks to the same regional pricing, that would likely translate to around £599 in the UK. Additionally, it would likely cost AU$999 in Australia. In a year where phone prices continue to creep upward, that alone could make the 17e appealing.
That said, expectations should probably be kept in check. Gurman suggests the iPhone 17e won’t be a major upgrade over its predecessor. The headline changes are said to be a move to Apple’s A19 chip – up from the A18 – and the addition of MagSafe support. Beyond that, it sounds like this will be very much a refinement rather than a rethink.
Those modest changes would also explain how Apple can keep pricing steady, even with rising component costs like RAM. And while the upgrade list may look underwhelming on paper, this kind of incremental update has been typical of Apple’s mid-range strategy in recent years.
The iPhone 17e is expected to go up against phones like the upcoming Pixel 10a, which is also rumoured to be a fairly minor update. If rivals either cost more or offer even fewer improvements, Apple could still be in a strong position. Therefore, Apple could remain strong even if the 17e doesn’t generate much excitement.
If the leaks are right, we may not have long to wait to see Apple’s next mid-range iPhone. Even if it ends up being a fairly familiar one – and far from the best iPhone – it may be released soon.
