Amazon is adding a fresh batch of generative AI features to its top-end Kindle Scribe models.
Consequently, the e-reader-and-notebook hybrid is a little smarter when it comes to organising and sharing notes.
The new tools are available on the latest Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in the US. They focus on helping users search, summarise and refine handwritten notes more efficiently. Moreover, it’s a notable shift for the Scribe line. Amazon has increasingly positioned this line as more than just a large-screen Kindle.
The headline addition is AI-powered notebook search. This feature lets users find ideas across their notebooks using natural language. Instead of manually flicking through pages, you can type in a query and receive an AI-generated summary based on relevant notes. Additionally, you have the option to ask follow-up questions for more detail.
There’s also a built-in notebook summarisation tool. With a tap of the AI icon, pages of handwritten notes can be condensed into concise bullet points designed to highlight key takeaways. The summaries are converted into a script-style font that preserves the look of handwriting. This improves legibility for sharing.
For messier note-takers, Amazon has introduced a Refine Writing feature. This converts handwritten scribbles into a cleaner script font directly within the notebook, making them easier to read and distribute. Users can still edit the refined text afterwards using the pen tool, keeping the experience flexible rather than locked down.
Another addition, Send to Alexa, allows notebooks and documents to be shared directly to Alexa. Once transferred, users can access them via Alexa.com, the Alexa app, or compatible devices like Echo and Fire TV. Alexa can then summarise notes, suggest priorities, or even turn ideas into to-do lists, calendar entries and reminders.
The AI updates arrive alongside Amazon’s recently refreshed Kindle Scribe hardware. The device is thinner (5.4mm), lighter (400g), and 40% faster for writing and page turns. Amazon also introduced the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. This device features its new colour display technology.
With these GenAI additions, Amazon is clearly pushing the Scribe beyond passive reading. Instead, it is moving closer to becoming a lightweight productivity tool for students, professionals and anyone who prefers thinking with a pen in hand.
