Google has confirmed that the Android 17 Beta programme is about to begin.
This follows the release of Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1, which marks the final update in the current testing cycle.
In a brief update, Google said that “Android 17 Beta 1 will kick off soon,” shifting focus to what it calls the next beta cycle covering the Android 17 Platform Release (26Q2). While no exact date has been given, a broader rollout in the coming weeks now looks likely.
For users already enrolled in the Android Beta Programme and running 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1, the transition will happen automatically. Devices that remain opted in will receive Android 17 Beta 1 as an over-the-air update, without any additional sign-up required.
There is, however, a catch. Once you install Android 17 Beta 1, you won’t be able to opt out without triggering a full data wipe until the beta cycle concludes in June 2026. That’s standard policy for Google’s early preview builds. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting for anyone considering testing the software on a daily driver.
If you’d prefer to skip Android 17 testing altogether, Google says you’ll need to opt out of the Beta Programme and ignore the downgrade OTA update. The downgrade notification will clearly state “Downgrade” in its description. As long as you don’t apply that downgrade update, opting out won’t erase your data. Instead, you’ll need to wait for the stable release of Android 16 QPR3 (CP1A), expected in March.
A June 2026 release window for Android 17 isn’t surprising, given Google’s typical platform schedule. Still, with Beta 1 now imminent, we’ll soon get our first real look at what’s next for the Android platform.
For Pixel users enrolled in beta testing, the message is straightforward: Android 17 is coming, and if you’re opted in, you’ll be among the first to try it.
