Spotify is rolling out a new feature called Prompted Playlist, and it could change how you create playlists on the music streaming platform.
Instead of tapping through genres or relying on pre-built mixes, users can now type out a request in plain language and Spotify will generate a playlist based on it.
To try it, tap the “+” button in the bottom-right corner of the Spotify app and select Prompted Playlist. From there, you can describe a mood, memory, idea or even a very specific scenario and Spotify’s system will do the rest.
The big difference here is how deep it goes. Spotify says Prompted Playlist pulls from your entire listening history, from your very first stream to what you’re playing today. It also blends in real-time music data, including trends, charts, and cultural moments, to shape the final result.

Prompted Playlist isn’t not just another mood-based generator — it’s personalised in a way previous features on the platform haven’t quite been.
Spotify is positioning this as a way to put more control in the user’s hands. Rather than tweaking an algorithm indirectly through likes and skips, you’re steering it directly with your own words and logic.
The company even suggests some prompts to show how specific you can get. For example, you can ask Spotify to round up songs you’ve saved but barely played — a way to rediscover tracks that got lost in your Library. Or you can go fully nostalgic and request the very first songs you ever streamed on Spotify, and these songs can be ordered by date and time.
You can even tie it to pop culture moments. For instance, you can ask for gothic, romantic tracks after watching a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Moreover, you can layer these with songs from your own history that match the mood.
Spotify has experimented with AI-driven playlist tools before. However, Prompted Playlist feels like its most ambitious attempt yet to merge long-term listening data with real-time intelligence.
If it works as advertised, this could be one of the most personal ways yet to explore your own music history. It is not just about what’s trending today, but also about everything you’ve ever pressed play on.
