Apple is reportedly testing a new red finish for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, potentially introducing a colour option never before offered on a Pro-tier iPhone.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is experimenting with what he describes as a “deep red” shade for this year’s Pro models, suggesting a darker, burgundy-style tone rather than a bright primary red.
If introduced, the colour would mark the first time that Apple has offered a red finish on its Pro or Pro Max variants, as previous red iPhones were limited to non-Pro models such as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus under the (PRODUCT)RED branding.
A deeper red option would also align with Apple’s recent trend toward muted, premium tones for Pro devices, which have typically launched in finishes such as titanium grey, blue and natural metallic shades.
Earlier speculation had suggested that Apple might introduce purple or brown finishes for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, though Gurman now believes those colours may have been alternate tonal variations of the same red concept rather than separate options.
That interpretation indicates Apple may have tested multiple colour samples within a similar burgundy spectrum before narrowing down its final choice for production.
Foldable model to remain conservative
Gurman also reports that Apple intends to take a more restrained approach with its anticipated foldable iPhone, avoiding bold colour options in favour of traditional finishes.
The foldable model is expected to launch in more conventional shades such as space grey or black and silver or white, reflecting Apple’s typical strategy for first-generation hardware.
Aside from the new colour options under consideration, the iPhone 18 lineup is also widely speculated to adopt an eSIM-only design worldwide, potentially removing the physical SIM tray across all models.
Apple traditionally unveils its new iPhone models in September, and the company is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone during its annual autumn event. Those waiting for the regular 18 will have to wait a little longer though; sources say that won’t appear until early 2027.
