If you were hoping Apple secretly added a 24x camera to the iPhone 17 Pro, it hasn’t. However, a new accessory might get you close.
Photography brand Sandmarc has launched the $299 Tetraprism 72mm Lens, a clip-on optical lens designed to extend the iPhone’s built-in telephoto system.
When paired with the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, the lens enables up to 24x zoom. It does this by combining the phone’s native tetraprism zoom with an added 3x optical magnification.
Unlike digital zoom, which crops and enlarges an image, this add-on introduces extra optical reach before the image hits the sensor. As a result, according to Sandmarc, you get improved subject separation. You also see stronger background compression and better detail retention at longer distances. This is particularly useful for wildlife, cityscapes, and live events.
The 72mm lens is built from multi-element, multi-coated glass designed to maintain colour accuracy and minimise flare. It weighs 180g and mounts directly over the iPhone’s tetraprism telephoto lens. This is done using Sandmarc’s dedicated case and filter mount system. Therefore, it creates a more modular photography setup.
While the headline feature is 24x zoom on the iPhone 17 Pro range, the accessory also works with older models. It supports up to 15x zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. In these models, the lens extends its native telephoto reach similarly.
The Tetraprism 72mm Lens measures 70mm in height with a 40.5mm diameter, and includes a 17mm inner thread for filter compatibility. Furthermore, it integrates with Sandmarc’s broader ecosystem of cases and filters. This positions it as part of a travel-friendly kit rather than a standalone novelty.
In short, if you want 24x zoom on your iPhone 17 Pro, you won’t find it hidden in Settings. However, with the right lens attachment, you can get surprisingly close to DSLR-style reach without switching cameras.
