Everything you need to know about the MacBook M5 Pro and M5 Max

Apple has unveiled new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

The company promises major gains in performance, storage speeds and on-device AI. Pre-orders open March 4, with availability starting March 11.

MacBook M5 Pro and M5 Max Specs

At the heart of the update are the new chips, built using Apple’s Fusion Architecture. Both feature a redesigned CPU and next-gen GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core. As a result, they deliver up to 4x faster AI performance than the previous generation. They are also up to 8x faster than M1 models, according to Apple.

The M5 Pro includes up to an 18-core CPU and supports up to 64GB unified memory with 307GB/s memory bandwidth. This makes it ideal for demanding coding, photography and 3D workloads. The M5 Max pushes further, offering up to 128GB unified memory and 614GB/s bandwidth. Therefore, it is aimed at engineers, VFX artists and AI developers running intensive simulations or local LLMs.

Both models also benefit from significantly faster storage, with Apple claiming up to 2x quicker SSD speeds. This reaches as high as 14.5GB/s. Starting storage has increased too: 1TB standard on M5 Pro and 2TB on M5 Max.

For video creators, the new MacBook Pro supports up to 7K oversampled 4K recording workflows. Meanwhile, graphics performance sees up to a 50% boost over M4 Pro and Max. Furthermore, battery life remains strong at up to 24 hours. Performance stays consistent whether plugged in or running on battery.

MacBook Pro M5 Max/M5 Pro Connectivity and Screen

Elsewhere, the laptop gains Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via Apple’s new N1 wireless chip. There are three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI with up to 8K output, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 fast charging and support for up to four external displays (on M5 Max).

The Liquid Retina XDR display returns with up to 1600 nits HDR brightness, plus an optional nano-texture finish.

The new MacBook Pro runs macOS Tahoe. This brings expanded Apple Intelligence features, Live Translation, upgraded Spotlight search and deeper system-wide AI tools.

MacBook Pro M5 Max/M5 Pro Price and Release Date

In the US and UK, pricing for the MacBook Pro lineup starts at $2,199 / £2,199 for the 14-inch model with the M5 Pro. Prices rise to $2,699 / £2,699 for the 16-inch version.

Stepping up to the M5 Max pushes the 14-inch model to $3,599 / £3,599. Meanwhile, the 16-inch configuration starts at $3,899 / £3,899. All models are available in either Space Black or Silver.

For upgraders coming from Intel or early Apple Silicon models, this is one of the biggest generational jumps yet. This is particularly evident if AI workloads, high-resolution video or complex 3D projects are part of your daily workflow.
