The MacBook Neo is a great deal for students

Apple has launched the MacBook Neo at $599, and for eligible college students and educational staff the price drops further to $499 through Apple’s education store, making it the most accessible entry point into the Mac laptop lineup the company has offered in years.

The MacBook Neo arrives at a moment when the rest of Apple’s laptop range has moved in the opposite pricing direction, with the MacBook Air starting at $1,099 following its M5 update this week, a $100 increase over the previous generation that widens the gap between the two lines to as much as $500.

That price distance is significant in the student laptop market, where Chromebooks and budget Windows machines have long held an advantage over Macs on cost alone, and a $499 education price puts the MacBook Neo within reach of a segment that has historically defaulted to non-Apple hardware purely on budget grounds.

Only one configuration upgrade exists for the MacBook Neo, a $100 step-up that adds a Touch ID button and expands internal storage from the base option to 512GB, bringing the maximum price to $699 for the general public and $599 for education buyers, a ceiling that remains well below any other Mac laptop currently in the lineup.

For context, the 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,099, the 15-inch MacBook Air at $1,299, the 14-inch MacBook Pro at $1,699, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro at $2,699, placing the MacBook Neo in a price tier that Apple has not occupied with a laptop for several years.

Reseller pricing through retailers such as Amazon could push the MacBook Neo below its official launch price once stock becomes more widely available, a pattern that has historically benefited budget-conscious buyers willing to wait a few weeks after a new Mac model goes on sale.

The MacBook Neo is available to pre-order now and launches on Wednesday, March 11, with pricing starting at $599 for the general public and $499 for eligible education buyers in the United States.
