The PS6 could rely heavily on AI

Sony might not be talking about the PlayStation 6 just yet, but its latest comments suggest AI could play a much bigger role in the next generation.

In a recent interview shared by Digital Foundry, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation is on the way to “PlayStation platforms”. However, we won’t see it roll out anytime soon.

While he stopped short of naming specific hardware, the wording leaves the door open for future consoles, not just current ones like the PS5 Pro.

The tech in question is part of Sony’s ongoing collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst. It builds on the same foundations as AMD’s latest upscaling and frame generation tools, combining techniques like AI upscaling, frame generation, and ray regeneration to improve performance. It does this without relying purely on raw hardware power.

Right now, Sony’s focus is on its existing PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) tech. This is already being used to boost image quality on PS5 Pro titles. But frame generation, the ability to create additional frames using AI rather than rendering them traditionally, hasn’t made its way to PlayStation hardware yet.

That’s the interesting bit. Cerny says an equivalent solution “should be seen at some point,” but also confirmed that there are no further releases planned this year. That timing, combined with the scale of the feature, makes it feel more like groundwork for what’s next. It does not seem like something imminent.

There’s also been speculation around more advanced AI features, including adaptive quality systems that adjust image processing dynamically. Cerny downplayed those reports, noting that not every patent reflects a real product or feature in development.

Still, the direction of travel is clear. As consoles hit the limits of traditional performance gains, AI is becoming a bigger part of the equation. In fact, this is the case not just for visuals, but for how games run altogether.

If frame generation does land alongside Sony’s next hardware, the PS6 could end up leaning far more on AI than any PlayStation before it.
