Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone might finally be tackling one of the category’s biggest problems head-on: fragile displays.
A new supply chain report suggests Apple is testing multiple durability upgrades for the so-called iPhone Fold. This is happening alongside efforts to make that telltale screen crease less obvious.
According to the leak, Apple is exploring a dual-layer glass setup, combining ultra-thin glass (UTG) and ultra-flexible glass (UFG). In simple terms, the display would sit between these layers rather than directly against the hinge. This move should improve durability and help smooth out the crease over time.
The same report points to self-healing glass and a redesigned hinge mechanism, both aimed at reducing wear from repeated folding. Additionally, Apple is said to be refining internal components like ribbon cable placement to avoid long-term damage. This has been a weak point in earlier foldables.
If all of this sounds cautious, it probably is. Early devices like the Samsung Galaxy Fold ran into major issues at launch. Screen failures forced Samsung to delay the release and cancel pre-orders entirely. That rocky start is widely believed to be one reason Apple has taken its time entering the foldable space.
Apple’s reported approach suggests it’s trying to avoid those same pitfalls. Previous rumours have already hinted at a tougher built-in screen protector and closer collaboration with display partners to improve reliability. Now, this latest leak builds on that. It paints a picture of a device designed to last, not just impress on day one.
There’s still no official launch date. However, expectations are that a foldable iPhone could arrive alongside the iPhone 18 Pro at Apple’s usual September event. In the meantime, devices like Oppo’s latest foldables offer a glimpse at where the category is heading – thinner builds, subtler creases, and fewer durability concerns.
If Apple gets this right, the iPhone Fold could end up being less about flashy innovation and more about fixing what foldables still struggle with.
