Google’s going to make it more difficult to sideload apps on Android phone

Google is tightening the screws on sideloading and is introducing a new “advanced flow” to make installing apps from outside official stores a much longer and more deliberate process.

Rolling out later this year via Google Play services, the change is designed to protect users from scams that rely on panic and urgency. In short: if you want to install an app from an unverified developer, Android will now slow you down on purpose.

The new system adds several hoops before sideloading is fully unlocked. Firstly, users must enable Developer Mode manually, then they need to confirm they’re not being guided by a scammer.

After that, the phone forces a restart and re-authentication. As a result, this cuts off any remote access or active calls that could be used to pressure someone into installing malicious software.

However, the biggest change is a mandatory one-day “security wait”. This delay, verified with biometrics or a PIN, is designed to give users time to reconsider before going through with a potentially risky install. It’s a one-time step and, once completed, sideloading can be enabled either indefinitely or temporarily for seven days.

Even then, Android will continue to flag apps from unverified sources with clear warnings, but users can still ultimately choose to install them.

Google says the feature is specifically aimed at combating scams where attackers stay on the phone, pushing victims to disable protections in real time. By adding friction and forcing breaks in that process, the company hopes fewer people will be caught out.

The update arrives ahead of broader developer verification changes, which will require stricter checks for app distribution. At the same time, Google is introducing “limited distribution” accounts which lets developers share apps with up to 20 users without paying fees or submitting government ID.

For enthusiasts, sideloading isn’t going away, but it’s definitely becoming less instant.
