Samsung is preparing to upgrade charging speeds on its next-generation foldables, with new regulatory filings indicating the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will support faster wired charging that addresses a long-standing limitation in the series.
Recent listings from Chinese certification authorities reveal that Samsung is moving the Galaxy Z Fold lineup to 45W wired charging, marking the first major increase since the company standardised 25W speeds across its book-style foldables.
The upgrade brings the foldable range closer to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S devices, which have supported higher charging rates for several years and recently pushed beyond 45W with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Two model numbers appear in the filings, SM-F9710 and SM-F9760, with the latter aligning with a wider-format foldable that suggests Samsung continues to expand the form factor beyond the standard Fold design.
Charging upgrade and battery expectations
Samsung’s shift to 45W charging reflects broader pressure from competitors that now offer faster charging alongside larger batteries, particularly in foldable devices that demand more frequent top-ups due to power-hungry displays.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 currently relies on 25W USB-C charging paired with a 4,400mAh battery, a combination that delivers acceptable speeds but struggles to keep pace with heavier multitasking and extended screen usage.
Meanwhile, Honor’s upcoming Magic V6 pairs a significantly larger 6,660mAh battery with 80W wired charging, reflecting how competing foldables increasingly prioritise both endurance and rapid top-ups as part of everyday usability.
Oppo’s Find N6 similarly combines a high-capacity 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired charging, allowing it to gain a full charge in under an hour in Trusted Reviews’ tests, reinforcing how rivals treat fast charging as a core usability feature rather than a delayed improvement.
Reports also suggest that Samsung will finally increase battery capacity in the Galaxy Z Fold 8, addressing another area where the series has remained unchanged despite noticeable gains in competing foldables from Chinese manufacturers.
Long-standing limitations in the Fold series
Samsung has maintained 25W charging across most Galaxy Z Fold models since the Galaxy Z Fold 2, following the original Galaxy Fold’s 15W charging, leaving the lineup behind faster-moving flagship standards despite improvements in performance and displays.
Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 8 later this year, likely in the summer, with pricing, regional availability, and full specifications to be confirmed closer to launch.
