Apple could be gearing up for a major camera leap.
According to a fresh leak, the company is testing a 200-megapixel telephoto sensor that could make its way into an iPhone as early as next year.
The tip comes from a reliable source Digital Chat Station on Chinese social platform Weibo, who claims Apple is currently evaluating a 1/1.2-inch 200MP sensor, a significant jump from the company’s current 48MP setup. If accurate, it would mark one of the biggest upgrades to the iPhone’s zoom camera in years.
For context, Apple has largely focused on refining its existing camera system rather than chasing megapixel numbers. As recently as January, the same leaker suggested 200MP sensors were only being discussed internally, not actively tested. That makes this latest development feel like a shift in direction.
A move to 200MP would bring some clear benefits. Higher resolution images mean more detail, better cropping flexibility, and improved large-format printing without losing quality. It could also help Apple close the gap with rivals like Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. That device introduced a 200MP camera back in 2023 and has stuck with it in newer models.
There’s also some context from the wider industry. Oppo has already pushed into similar territory with its periscope zoom cameras. Upcoming flagship models are expected to use even larger sensors. This suggests Apple isn’t experimenting in a vacuum here.
That said, nothing is confirmed. Earlier reports from Morgan Stanley suggested a 200MP iPhone might not land until 2028. Therefore, a 2026 debut would be a faster turnaround than expected.
If it does arrive next year, it could tie into a bigger iPhone refresh cycle. Apple is reportedly planning a split launch for the iPhone 18 lineup, alongside a potential 20th anniversary model. This would make it a fitting moment for a headline camera upgrade.
For now, it’s just a test. But if Apple follows through, the iPhone’s zoom camera could be about to get a serious boost.
