Samsung Messages gets an official end-of-life date

Samsung has officially set July 2026 as the end-of-life date for Samsung Messages, confirming the retirement of its long-running default texting app and directing users to switch to Google Messages ahead of the shutdown.

The move formalises a transition that began in July 2024, when Samsung announced it would make Google Messages the default SMS and RCS app across its Galaxy device lineup, a shift that has since extended to the Galaxy S26 series shipping without Samsung Messages pre-installed entirely.

Samsung explains that the decision behind this is to enable a “consistent messaging experience on Android”. Plus, users will benefit from multiple updates from the switch, including multi-device connectivity and RCS too.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, has become the dominant next-generation messaging protocol on Android, with Google Messages serving as its primary vehicle across the ecosystem, making Samsung’s continued operation of a parallel messaging app increasingly difficult to justify from a platform strategy perspective.

Google Messages has steadily expanded its feature set over the past two years, adding end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations, cross-device messaging, and improved spam filtering, closing the gap on features that Samsung Messages users may have previously considered reasons to stay with the first-party app.

Users still running Samsung Messages will receive in-app notifications guiding them through the transition process, with on-screen instructions covering the switch to Google Messages and the download from the Play Store for devices that do not already have it installed.

Samsung has indicated that the exact shutdown date may vary by region or device, suggesting a phased rollout rather than a simultaneous global cutoff, which could extend the transition period for some users beyond the July 2026 headline date.

Devices running Android 11 or older fall outside the shutdown scope entirely, with Samsung confirming continued Samsung Messages support on those models, likely due to compatibility constraints that make a forced migration to Google Messages impractical on older software versions.
