Sony’s new tech can put you right into Gran Turismo

Sony is giving PlayStation fans something a little different this time, the chance to actually show up inside its games.

The company has announced The Playerbase, a new initiative that will scan real players into upcoming titles. It will start with Gran Turismo 7.

The idea is simple but pretty novel: sign up, go through a selection process, and you could end up as part of a PlayStation world. Sony says applicants will need to log in with their PlayStation account and answer a few questions. If shortlisted, they will take part in interviews about their connection to the brand. From there, one fan will be chosen for the first round.

The selected player will be scanned at a visual arts studio in Los Angeles and turned into an in-game character portrait in Gran Turismo 7. This is similar to how drivers are presented in the game. They will also work with designers to create a custom logo and vehicle livery. As a result, this will be permanently added to the game’s Showcase mode.

Sony is not stopping there, though. The company says The Playerbase will expand into other PlayStation Studios titles over time. This could eventually include big franchises like God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Horizon — though details on how fans might appear in those worlds are still vague.

The programme is rolling out across multiple regions, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australia, with applications open now.

Sony frames the initiative as a way to celebrate its community, and it is easy to see the appeal. Plenty of games already blur the line between player and character. However, this takes it a step further, turning that connection into something you can literally see on screen.
