Microsoft is quietly dialling back one of Windows 11’s more visible AI changes.
The company has started removing Copilot buttons from several built-in apps, including Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos and Widgets. This is a move that suggests a rethink rather than a full retreat from AI.
As shared by The Verge, the change has already appeared in the latest Windows Insider builds. In Notepad, the dedicated Copilot icon is gone. It has been replaced with a more subtle “Writing tools” menu that still taps into the same AI-powered features. Over in Snipping Tool, the Copilot button no longer shows up when selecting part of the screen. As a result, this streamlines what was starting to feel like a cluttered capture experience.
This is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to “reduce unnecessary Copilot entry points” across Windows 11. In other words, Copilot isn’t going away, it’s just becoming less in-your-face.
That distinction matters. While the branding is being toned down, the underlying AI tools are sticking around. The writing tools in Notepad, for example, still offer the same functionality as before. They just work without the constant Copilot label attached. It’s a small shift, but one that makes these lightweight apps feel a bit closer to their original purpose.
The move also hints that Microsoft may have pushed Copilot a little too aggressively at launch. Over the past year, the assistant has shown up across the OS — from app interfaces to even dedicated keyboard buttons on some laptops. It has not always appeared in ways that felt necessary.
There’s no indication yet that Microsoft plans to remove Copilot more widely. However, this rollback suggests the company is listening to feedback. For now, Windows 11 users can expect a cleaner interface. AI will still be there when you need it, just not front and centre anymore.
