Amazon is finally fixing one of the biggest omissions on its colour e-readers.
A system-wide dark mode is now rolling out to Kindle Colorsoft devices, including the Scribe Colorsoft. The update is arriving over the next couple of weeks.
Until now, dark mode was oddly missing from Amazon’s colour-screen Kindles, despite being available on its monochrome models for years. The closest workaround was Page Colour mode, which inverted colours within supported books, but it didn’t extend to the wider interface. However, this update changes that, bringing a proper dark theme across both books and the Kindle UI.
The implementation is flexible, too. You don’t have to commit to dark mode everywhere; users can choose where it applies. So, if you prefer reading in dark mode but want notebooks or menus to stay in light mode, that’s still an option.
It’s a small tweak on paper, but a meaningful one in practice. E Ink displays are already easier on the eyes than typical phone or tablet screens, so adding a darker interface should make nighttime reading even more comfortable. Especially for those using the Colorsoft as a more all-round note-taking device.
That’s not the only update landing alongside it. Amazon is also rolling out Smart Shapes, a new tool designed to tidy up handwritten notes. Sketch a rough shape, and the Kindle will automatically refine it into clean lines and curves. This makes notebooks feel a bit more polished without needing pixel-perfect drawing skills.
For current Colorsoft owners, it’s a long-overdue upgrade that makes the devices feel just a bit more complete.
