Valve’s long-rumoured return to the living room might not be as far off as it seemed.
After months of near silence, two small but telling clues suggest the Steam Machine is still on course for a 2026 launch. Even so, Valve hasn’t said much publicly.
The first hint comes from behind the scenes. According to reports from Steam backend watchers, Valve is still actively maintaining new “packages” tied to the Steam Machine and something called “Steam Frame.” These entries typically relate to store listings, bundles or regional versions. At the very least, this suggests the hardware hasn’t been shelved.
The second clue is a bit more direct. In a recent interview, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais indicated that the Steam Machine is largely finished. The current focus is now shifting to actually getting the device into users’ hands. That points less to design delays and more to practical hurdles, namely manufacturing and distribution.
Put together, it paints a clearer picture: the Steam Machine may be ready. However, getting it out the door is proving trickier than expected.
That lines up with what we’ve heard elsewhere. Valve hardware engineer Steve Cardinali previously noted that the upcoming Steam Controller is launching first. This is partly because it doesn’t rely on components like RAM.
Reportedly, that has been a sticking point for the Steam Machine. High memory prices and supply constraints are still an issue. As a result, these factors could be slowing things down behind the scenes.
Still, the key detail is this: Valve hasn’t changed the 2026 release window. And in typical Valve fashion, no news doesn’t necessarily mean bad news.
Of course, none of this guarantees an imminent reveal. Backend updates and developer comments aren’t the same as an official announcement. Valve has a habit of taking its time with hardware. But for now, there’s enough movement to suggest the Steam Machine is still very much alive. It is not quietly slipping into 2027 just yet.
For anyone hoping for a proper Steam-powered console in the living room, that’s at least a reason to keep paying attention.
