Sony’s celebrates 80 years with Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II True RGB TVs

After months and months of teasing, Sony has revealed its vision of TV’s future; and it’s looking very bright and very colourful.

Following in the footsteps of Samsung and Hisense with their recently launched RGB Mini LEDs, Sony steps into the fray with models that it believes deliver on the true potential of RGB LED technology in the Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II.

But that’s not all. Following up from the new TVs and sound systems it launched a few months, there’s another sound system arriving with the True RGB TVs in the Bravia Theatre Trio.

Sony’s True RGB TVs have finally arrived

First of, the news Bravia TV fans have been waiting months for. The first genuine glimpse of Sony’s brand new RGB Mini LED TVs.

The Bravia 9 II (we’re still disappointed it’s not called the Bravia 10) sits at the top of Sony’s TV tree, with the Bravia 7 II a few rungs down for a more affordable taste of RGB colour pyrotechnics. They’re both powered by Sony’s proprietary RGB Master Backlight Drive Pro, which Sony says “precisely controls independently driven red, greem and blue light sources”, helping to deliver the “largest colour volume ever in Sony’s home TV history”.

The benefits of this explosion in brightness and colour is improved contrast, depth and gradation, and in the demos Trusted Reviews attended at Sony HQ in Weybridge, it did deliver a better colour and gradation performance than one of our favourite TVs in the Bravia 8 II.

Sony’s RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro also helps to reduce blooming and produce “purer colour” than more conventional Mini LED displays, as well as viewing angles more closely associated with OLED screens when partnered with Sonys X-Wide Angle Pro technology.

Sizes for the Bravia 9 II include a massive 115-inch model with sizes starting at 65-inches. The step down Bravia 7 II ranges from 50- to 98-inches. Expecting RGB TVs to be available in sizes smaller than 50-inches? That seems unlikely.

Sound-wise, both TVs feature full range speakers that deliver a “solid” sound with dialogue enhanced with Sony’s AI-powered Voice Zoom 3 tecnology. The TVs are also able to take stereo sound and expand it to “wider 3D surround” with what’s called 3D Surround Upscaling.

But what if you didn’t want to rely on a TV’s built-in speakers? Sony’s come up with a speaker system that can deliver cinematic, immersive sound within the walls of your home.

Sony claims that the Bravia Theatre Trio is, in some ways, more advanced and powerful than its Bravia Theatre Quad system. Made up of speaker with left, centre and middle channels, plus two speakers that go either, the Bravia Theatre Trio is a premium wireless theatre system designed for “ultra large screens”, and developed in close collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).

It supports Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology that’s able to generate up to 24 phantom speakers to have sound appearing as if its’s coming from all directions. The Bravia Theatre Trio works with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced content, and can be expanded from the original trio of speakers with subwoofers and rear speakers (including dual subwoofers).

A rather unique feature of the Theatre Trio is the addition of USB-C microphone that can measure your room (in an acoustic sense) and calibrate the speakers for the room to create a sound that’s “perfectly tuned to any space”.
