CapCut’s new tablet app makes pro‑style video edits free on Android

CapCut is finally bringing its more powerful editing experience to Android tablets with the launch of CapCut Pad.

Until now, Android tablet users were essentially running a stretched version of the phone app, which made better use of screen space but didn’t really feel designed for a larger canvas. At the same time, the desktop version of CapCut offered far more depth, but obviously wasn’t portable.

CapCut Pad sits between those two extremes, aiming to bring a more “desktop-like” workflow into a mobile-first environment.

The key change is the interface itself. With a larger workspace and a redesigned layout, CapCut Pad gives more room for timelines, media bins, and editing controls, making multi-layer edits easier to manage on a tablet screen. It’s still recognisably CapCut, but it’s clearly been rethought for a bigger display rather than simply scaled up.

Feature-wise, nothing has been stripped back. Users still have access to core editing tools such as keyframe animation, chroma key, slow-motion effects, and video stabilisation, along with a wide library of fonts and visual effects. The app also supports exports up to 4K at 60fps with HDR, putting it closer to desktop editing workflows than typical mobile editors.

A key advantage is cross-device continuity. Users can start projects on a phone and then move them seamlessly to a tablet or even a desktop if needed. That kind of flexibility is increasingly important for creators who don’t stick to a single device when producing content.

For now, CapCut Pad is available free on the Google Play Store, with no subscription or feature restrictions at launch. That immediately makes it one of the most accessible “pro-style” editing tools on Android tablets. Even so, it’s unclear how long the free model will last.

Taken as a whole, CapCut Pad doesn’t reinvent mobile video editing, but it does finally give Android tablet users a proper middle ground.
