The first iPhone 18 Pro teardown has revealed a few of the changes Apple made inside its latest flagship, including a larger battery, a bigger vapour chamber and a redesigned Dynamic Island.
A short teardown video from the REWA Technology YouTube channel gives a closer look at the internals, although it doesn’t reveal any major surprises. It does, however, show how Apple has rearranged some components around the new A20 Pro processor and cooling system.
The biggest change is the vapour chamber. Apple has moved the A20 Pro so that it sits directly against the cooling system, which is also larger than the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro. The change follows Apple’s own comments about the redesigned cooling system and should help explain how the company is managing heat from its latest processor.
The teardown also shows a small increase in battery capacity. The version examined has a physical SIM card and its battery is around 1.7% larger than the one inside the iPhone 17 Pro. That’s a modest change, but it lines up with testing that has already found a slight improvement in battery life.
Then there’s the Dynamic Island. Apple has made the cutout narrower on the iPhone 18 Pro, and the teardown provides a look at how that was achieved. The infrared camera has been moved into the corner of the display, freeing up some space and helping shrink the familiar pill-shaped cutout.
That change could have an unwanted consequence for repairs, though. The teardown notes that moving the infrared camera creates a new challenge for aftermarket display manufacturers, suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro may be somewhat harder to repair than its predecessor.
The video also highlights changes to materials and internal cables, although it is primarily focused on the process of taking the phone apart and examining how those design changes affect repairability.
More detailed teardowns will likely reveal more about Apple’s internal changes, but this first look already gives us a better idea of what’s happening beneath the iPhone 18 Pro’s redesigned exterior. The phone and iPhone 18 Pro Max are now available through Apple Stores, with the first pre-orders also reaching buyers.
