Apple Music has opened a new 600-capacity music venue inside London’s Battersea Power Station, complete with a 48-speaker Spatial Audio system and the equipment to record, broadcast and livestream performances.
Called Apple Music Hall, the venue is designed around smaller live shows, with Apple describing it as a space for “bespoke, intimate performances”. It also gives Apple a dedicated place to capture live music in Spatial Audio rather than simply hosting concerts.
The 38-foot-wide stage can be configured for traditional front-facing performances or arranged for a more intimate in-the-round setup. Surrounding it is a 48-speaker sound system positioned around the audience, while a dedicated recording and mixing studio sits behind the stage.

That setup means a performance can be recorded as a multi-track session and mixed in Spatial Audio either live or afterwards. The venue is also wired for 16 or more cameras, feeding into a dedicated broadcast control room. Apple says the system can capture video from iPhones alongside conventional broadcast cameras, too.

In other words, Apple Music Hall isn’t just a place to put on a gig. The whole venue has been built to turn that gig into a finished piece of content for listeners and viewers elsewhere.
Apple says performances will also be livestreamed globally, giving fans outside London a way to watch shows from the venue.

The building itself gets plenty of attention, with the design incorporating Battersea Power Station’s heritage brickwork, fluted arches and bronze balconies inspired by its historic oriel windows. A large glass wall looks out across the concourse and towards the river.

Apple Music Hall joins Apple’s long-running involvement in live music, following projects including the iTunes Music Festival. The company says the new venue is intended to bring artists and fans together while making better use of its audio and video technology.
