Apple could finally be ready to put a touchscreen on the MacBook Pro, and we may now have an idea of when the first models will arrive.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple could introduce its long-rumoured 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens as early as October, with November also a possibility. That would put the launch within the next couple of months, although Apple has yet to confirm the plans.
Gurman says Apple is currently testing the laptops with macOS 27.2, which is in beta. The update is expected to arrive towards the end of October, giving Apple a possible window to announce the new MacBooks around the software release.
The OLED display and touch support would be the obvious headline changes, but the new MacBook Pro could get a few other tweaks too. Rumours point to Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, alongside a thinner design and a Dynamic Island-style cutout instead of the current notch.
There has also been speculation about cellular connectivity. Apple has previously explored Macs that could connect directly to 5G or LTE rather than relying on an iPhone hotspot, so some are hoping the touchscreen MacBook Pro could use Apple’s custom C1X or C2 modem. There’s no confirmation that cellular connectivity will actually make the cut, though.
The touchscreen models are also expected to sit above Apple’s regular 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Those standard machines are reportedly set to move to M7 Pro and M7 Max chips next year, making the OLED touchscreen versions a more premium option.
It’s not even clear what Apple will call the new machines. They could retain the MacBook Pro name, or Apple could give them a new tier such as MacBook Ultra.
For now, October is the earliest reported launch window, with November still on the table. Either way, a touchscreen MacBook Pro would mark a pretty significant change for Apple’s laptop lineup, especially after years of keeping touch interaction largely confined to the iPhone and iPad.
