Apple’s touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro set to be a seriously portable machine

Apple’s upcoming touchscreen MacBook Pro could be getting a major upgrade in more ways than one. Alongside its long-rumoured OLED display and touchscreen, the high-end laptop is reportedly set to be significantly lighter than the current models.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reworking the laptop’s internal layout by miniaturising components and rearranging them. The result could be a noticeably lighter MacBook Pro, although exactly how much weight Apple will shave off remains unclear.

For context, the current 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at 3.4 pounds, while the 16-inch model can reach 4.7 pounds. That makes the weight reduction particularly interesting for anyone who wants the performance of Apple’s Pro laptop without quite as much bulk in their bag.

The weight saving would arrive alongside two of the biggest changes yet for the MacBook Pro: an OLED display and touchscreen support. Gurman has reiterated that the new model is expected to arrive next month, alongside the first iPad mini with an OLED display.

Interestingly, the new MacBook Pro reportedly won’t wait for Apple’s next-generation M7 chips. Instead, it’s expected to use the existing higher-end M5 chips, suggesting the real focus of this update will be the hardware design and display rather than a new processor generation.

Ternus is focusing more on design

The upcoming MacBook Pro could be an early sign of CEO John Ternus putting more emphasis on product design. Unlike his predecessor, who was known for his supply chain and logistics expertise, Ternus has a background as a hardware engineer.

Gurman reports that one of Ternus’ first priorities as CEO has been rebuilding Apple’s design teams, which now report directly to him. That makes the redesigned MacBook Pro an interesting first example of where Apple’s hardware direction could be heading.

For now, Apple hasn’t officially confirmed the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro. But if the reports are accurate, the next model could combine a much more modern display with a slimmer internal design, while potentially making the traditionally hefty Pro laptop considerably easier to carry.
