iPhone Air 2 could be as thin as an open iPhone Duo – with battery life improvements too

Apple’s next iPhone Air could be even thinner than its predecessor, with a new leak suggests the company is working on a slimmer design without sacrificing battery capacity.

According to Korean Naver blogger yeux1122, the iPhone Air 2 will measure just 5.2mm thick, making it approximately 0.4mm thinner than the current model. That would put it at roughly the same thickness as the new iPhone Duo when unfolded.

For context, the original iPhone Air measures 5.6mm, meaning its successor could be around 7% thinner. That’s a noticeable reduction for a phone already designed around keeping things as slim and lightweight as possible.

Perhaps more interestingly, Apple is reportedly managing to squeeze a bigger battery into that smaller frame. Previous rumours suggest the iPhone Air 2 will feature a 3,500mAh battery, up from the current model’s 3,149mAh capacity.

That works out to an increase of around 11%, potentially addressing one of the biggest concerns surrounding ultra-thin smartphones. Of course, a larger battery doesn’t automatically guarantee longer battery life. However, it could give the Air 2 some welcome extra endurance.

The rumoured changes have already sparked discussion among iPhone Air owners on Reddit. In particular, these discussions focus on whether an even thinner phone makes much sense once you add a protective case.

Some users argue that the current Air is already durable enough to use without one. Meanwhile, others say a case actually makes the slim design easier to grip, especially around the raised camera section. There are also calls for Apple to address other compromises. For instance, one commenter pointed to the lack of stereo speakers as a dealbreaker. Others are hoping for an additional rear camera alongside the expected battery improvements.

Neither of those upgrades has been confirmed, however, and the latest leak focuses specifically on the phone’s thickness and battery capacity.

The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch in early 2027, potentially alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.

If the rumours prove accurate, Apple could be making its thinnest iPhone even slimmer. At the same time, they may be addressing some of the practical trade-offs that come with such a compact design.
