The 2026 Kindle lineup fixes one of the e-reader’s biggest weaknesses

Amazon’s latest Kindle lineup has gained a useful upgrade that could make its e-readers last considerably longer.

All Kindle models released in 2026 now feature replaceable batteries, making it easier for owners to keep their devices running without having to buy a new one when the battery wears out.

The change, first highlighted by Good E-Reader, comes as part of Amazon’s efforts to comply with the EU’s battery and right-to-repair requirements. While Kindles are already known for lasting weeks between charges, the ability to replace an ageing battery could significantly extend their overall lifespan.

Amazon has also introduced a new Battery Health feature that lets users check the condition of their Kindle’s battery, much like the tools already available on smartphones.

Found under Settings > Device Options > Battery > Battery Information, it displays three possible statuses: Normal, Battery Capacity Limited, and Incompatible Battery. The latter warns users when an unsupported replacement battery has been installed.

The feature is available across the entire 2026 Kindle range, including the standard Kindle, Kindle Kids editions, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft.

More importantly, Amazon has reportedly redesigned the devices to make battery replacements easier. On plastic models, users can remove the rear panel with a fingernail or opening tool before undoing four Phillips screws to access the battery. Aluminium versions require a hex screwdriver to remove two screws at the bottom, after which the battery can be lifted out.

Amazon has also included QR codes within the Kindle firmware that direct users to official replacement instructions and parts, making the process more accessible without requiring a professional repair.

It’s a welcome improvement, particularly as batteries are often among the first components to deteriorate in otherwise functional devices. With the EU pushing manufacturers towards more repairable electronics, Amazon’s latest change could make the new Kindles a more appealing long-term purchase.
