Spotify is reportedly planning a new AI-powered subscription add-on that could make its Premium service up to 39% more expensive.
According to a Financial Times report, the streaming giant is considering introducing the optional package as early as the first quarter of 2027.
The add-on is expected to cost between $4 and $5 per month on top of an existing Spotify Premium subscription, although the company has yet to officially confirm the plans or pricing.
The proposed features would allow subscribers to use AI to remix existing tracks or generate cover versions in different musical styles. For example, users could potentially take a familiar song and have AI recreate it as though it were performed by a completely different band. Now, we’re not sure about you – but to us, this sounds absolutely awful.
Unlike Spotify’s existing AI-powered recommendation tools, these features would go a step further by allowing listeners to change the music itself rather than simply discover new tracks.
However, the reported plans also raise questions about how artists would be compensated. Spotify is said to be negotiating with record labels over the use of copyrighted music in AI-generated content, but it’s still unclear how royalties would work or how much artists would receive. The report also suggests that some musicians have been reluctant to allow their work to be used in this way, potentially complicating the rollout.
The move comes as streaming services take different approaches to AI-generated music. While platforms such as Qobuz have taken steps to distance themselves from AI content, Spotify appears to be exploring how the technology could become an additional source of subscription revenue.
Now, the reported AI package remains unconfirmed, but if it goes ahead, it could mark a significant shift in how Spotify charges users for features beyond traditional music streaming.
