Apple’s next iPhone Air could be getting some much-needed upgrades, with a new leak suggesting the company is working on a larger battery, a second 48MP camera and a more powerful processor for its ultra-slim smartphone.
According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, the upcoming iPhone Air 2 is expected to feature Apple’s next-generation A20 series chipset, potentially the A20 Pro, which should deliver faster performance and improved power efficiency. That’s the chip in the iPad Mini 8.
The processor is also tipped to be paired with a larger battery, although exact capacity details haven’t been revealed. One of our issues with the slim phone was the endurance, so this would be welcome news.
Perhaps the biggest change, however, is the addition of a 48MP ultra-wide camera. The current iPhone Air features just a single 48MP rear camera, making the lack of a secondary lens one of its more noticeable compromises.
Even thinner?
Interestingly, Apple reportedly plans to squeeze these upgrades into an even thinner design. Digital Chat Station claims the iPhone Air 2 could measure just 5.2mm thick, down from the current model’s 5.6mm. That’s a notable reduction, particularly if Apple manages to increase battery capacity while adding another camera.
Not everything is expected to change, though. The iPhone Air 2 is tipped to retain its predecessor’s 6.55-inch OLED display, complete with LTPO technology, a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a 1.5K resolution. Hardly an issue, considering there isn’t really a better option around and it sits inbetween the current best iPhones.
The combination of a larger battery, improved efficiency and an additional camera could make the second-generation Air a more appealing option for buyers who like its slim design but don’t want to sacrifice too many features.
When could it arrive?
Apple hasn’t confirmed any details yet, but the iPhone Air 2 is reportedly scheduled to launch in early 2027, potentially alongside the standard iPhone 18.
For now, these upgrades remain rumours, although they suggest Apple may be looking to address some of the biggest compromises of its first ultra-slim iPhone.
