Nintendo has officially announced it is discontinuing the Nintendo Switch Online Voucher program that allowed members to save some extra cash on games.
The company states that the program will end on January 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM local time. After that date no further vouchers will be available for purchase.
The scheme enabled Nintendo Switch Online members to buy two game vouchers that could be redeemed for first-party and select third-party games. It represented a saving of up to 25% compared to buying the games individually, making it a great way of getting more Switch games for less.
While the voucher system will be no more, any vouchers bought before the cut-off will still be valid for a year. They’ll expire 12 months after you bought them, so make sure you spend them, rather than forgetting about them.
This news follows the earlier axing of the Nintendo Gold Points program that offered discounts based on how much you spent in the eShop.
Nintendo has also made it clear that exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be eligible for this promotion and will not be added, hardly a surprise considering titles like Mario Kart World are far pricier than games for the original console. However, upcoming titles for the original Switch will still be added, so you’ll be able to use the voucher for Pokémon Legends: Z-A when it launches in October.
As the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, this does remain a way to get more games that’ll work on the new console at a reduced rate.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an estimated 3.5 million units worldwide within four days of going on sale, and we were impressed with the console in our review.
Opinion
Nintendo Switch Online remains a good deal even without this benefit, although it.certainly was a nice way to save a little bit of cash on games. With the Switch to more varied (and higher) pricing for Switch 2 games, it always felt like the offer wouldn’t stick around in its current form. It is a shame that Nintendo couldn’t have tweaked things slightly to make it work. Ah well.
