Pizza UNESCO is back in the spotlight in Miami Beach thanks to Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the UniVerde Foundation and former minister, promoter of the international campaign that led to the recognition of the Neapolitan pizza maker’s art as an intangible heritage of humanity. At an event dedicated to gastronomic culture and civic engagement, Pecoraro Scanio relaunched the campaign by tying it to support for the mayoral candidacy of Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, a politician known for her commitment to inclusion, ecology and the protection of authentic food.
The event was well attended: citizens, activists, youth, and representatives of different local communities gathered to emphasize the value of pizza as a universal symbol of conviviality and identity. Among those present was Matti Herrera Bower, the first woman mayor of Miami Beach, to whom the city has dedicated a street, who spoke to reiterate her support for Rosen Gonzalez.
Pecoraro Scanio stressed the importance of political leadership capable of facing the challenges of the future with courage and vision:
This is an international, open, multicultural city and it is right that it can have a leader capable of looking to the future with courage, with policies of inclusion and ecology, far from the discrimination and divisions that have already caused too many problems. We need a mayor who speaks to young people, to innovators, and who works for a sustainable development model. The future is built with inclusion, ecology and true participation. It is critical that more women and men, globally, commit to more just, sustainable, and diversity-friendly communities.
Pecoraro Scanio stated.
Kristen Rosen Gonzalez recalled her membership in the Ecodigital network and the “No Fake Food” campaign, an initiative that defends the quality of gastronomic traditions and combats the spread of counterfeit foods. Her program aims to promote a model of local development that is equitable, sustainable and respectful of agrifood excellence.
The event thus ideally combined Italian pizza culture, recognized worldwide as a symbol of community and conviviality, with political commitment to a Miami Beach that aspires to be a laboratory of ecology, solidarity and social innovation.
