eSIM support finally comes to all GiffGaff customers

GiffGaff is finally opening up full eSIM support to everyone, marking the MVNO’s biggest step yet toward ditching physical SIM cards altogether.

As reported by ISPreview, the O2-powered network first rolled out eSIMs back in 2023, but availability was inconsistent – limited to certain devices, existing members, or only through the app.

Now, both new and current customers can activate an eSIM directly from the website with no hoops to jump through.

The update means you can choose between a physical SIM or an eSIM when picking a SIM-only plan on giffgaff’s site. Existing users can switch just as easily: log into the app, head to Account > SIM > Replace my SIM > Switch to a new eSIM, and follow the prompts. A setup video tutorial is also arriving next week for anyone who wants a bit of hand-holding through the process.

For new members, the flow is similarly simple — sign up on the web or app, activate the eSIM from the dashboard, and walk through the on-screen instructions. As long as your phone supports eSIMs, you’re good to go.

And if you’re not sure, giffgaff has a quick tip: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your device should be compatible.

While eSIM tech has been around for a while, the benefits still feel immediately practical. It cuts out the wait for a physical SIM to arrive, makes switching networks quicker, and lets you stack additional lines, like a travel eSIM, without ejecting anything from your phone. With the entire process now accessible from the website and not just the app, giffgaff’s implementation finally feels complete.

This rollout brings the network in line with what customers increasingly expect from modern carriers. And for giffgaff fans who’ve been waiting for a fully digital setup, it’s been a long time coming.
