Pixel’s AirDrop workaround isn’t working smoothly for everyone

Google’s big “Android-to-iPhone file sharing” moment is off to a shaky start.

After announcing that Quick Share now works with Apple’s AirDrop, some Pixel 10 owners are reporting a far less exciting side effect: their Wi-Fi drops the moment they open the Quick Share menu.

The issue first surfaced on Google’s support forum, where user JayMZ said their Pixel 10 instantly loses Wi-Fi connectivity as soon as they try to share something. Opening the Wi-Fi settings doesn’t help, the entire network list disappears. Even manually toggling Wi-Fi only brings back their home network, and it still won’t connect until Quick Share is closed.

A temporary fix exists, but it’s not ideal. According to the report, Wi-Fi only works normally again after removing the latest Quick Share extension update, the same one that enables AirDrop compatibility.

Other users on Reddit say they’re running into the same behaviour, calling it “clearly a software bug.” So while Google stressed last week that the feature had undergone extensive security testing including threat modelling, privacy reviews and internal penetration tests, it seems nobody checked whether the Wi-Fi would keep functioning.

The back-and-forth over the bug hasn’t been smooth either. The issue reached Google’s IssueTracker on November 22, but engineers there redirected the report to Google’s support forum… which in turn insists IssueTracker is the right place for it. The ticket was closed the same day.

What is clear is that Google is aware of the problem, though there’s no confirmation yet that a fix is on the way. For now, Pixel 10 owners excited to try “AirDrop for Android” may want to hold off if their Wi-Fi is something they’d prefer not to lose in the process.
