iFi’s iDSD Phantom is its most advanced all-in-one DAC yet

iFi Audio has launched the iDSD Phantom, a reference‑class DAC, network streamer, and headphone amplifier designed to be the centrepiece of any high‑end home audio system.

Building on the Pro iDSD model from several years back, the Phantom features a rebuilt streaming engine plus higher‑precision conversion, and with 7,747mW peak output power at its disposal, it makes the iDSD Phantom one of the brand’s most ambitious release yet.

In regards to the formats that it supports, the Phantom can play PCM up to 768kHz and native DSD512, with remastering up to DSD2048 via iFi’s Chrysopoeia FPGA engine.

This technology, once reserved for mastering studios, is now available to listeners in their own home, offering what iFi claims is unprecedented clarity and low distortion.

There’s also support for music streaming platforms such Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, and Roon.

This device comes with three distinct output modes. Listeners can tailor playback with real‑time circuitry switching. These options include:

Solid‑State Mode: Discrete J‑FETs for precision and ultra‑low distortion.

Tube Mode: NOS GE5670 valves for warmth and smoothness.

Tube+ Mode: Enhanced harmonic richness for a vintage analogue feel.

This level of flexibility allows users to shape the character of the sound to match their headphones or speakers, adding what iFi Audio believes is more emotional depth to playback.

In collaboration with JVCKENWOOD, the Phantom also integrates K2HD Technology to restore harmonics lost during digital encoding. Combined with XBass Pro and XSpace Pro, listeners gain control over bass impact and spatial presentation, creating a more lifelike and emotionally engaging soundstage.

As for the pricing, the iDSD Phantom is available now for a pricey £4,499 / $4,499 / €4,695, which is almost twice as much as the Pro iDSD.

For enthusiasts that seek a single device that unites streaming, conversion, and amplification at a reference level, the iDSD Phantom represents a big step forward in iFi’s evolution to be synonymous with high quality audio in the home.
