It looks like Apple isn’t putting Face ID beneath the iPhone 18 Pro screen after all

The idea of a truly uninterrupted iPhone display isn’t happening just yet. Despite recent reports suggesting Apple was ready to hide Face ID completely under the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro, a clearer picture is now emerging.

For weeks, there’s been confusion around what Apple planned to do with the Dynamic Island on its next Pro iPhones. Some leaks claimed Face ID would finally move under the display, leaving only a single punch-hole selfie camera. Others went even further, suggesting the camera itself might shift off-centre, potentially making the Dynamic Island redundant altogether.

That scenario now looks unlikely.

According to well-known leaker Instant Digital, earlier reports were based on a mistranslation. New component imagery reportedly shows that the selfie camera will stay centred, and there will still be a visible cutout for Face ID, albeit a smaller one than today. Former display analyst Ross Young, who has a strong track record with Apple leaks, has since backed up that interpretation.

In short, Apple appears to be refining the Dynamic Island rather than reinventing it.

This lines up with what we already know about Apple’s long-term ambitions. The company has been working toward what former design chief Jony Ive once described as a “single slab of glass”, with no visible interruptions at all. While Face ID is technically easier to hide under a display than a camera, Apple has consistently prioritised image quality that makes a fully hidden selfie camera a much harder problem to solve.

Some earlier reports, including claims from The Information and supply-chain sources in Korea, suggested the iPhone 18 Pro might finally take that first step. Even YouTuber Jon Prosser published renders imagining a left-aligned camera cutout. But with more reliable voices now weighing in, those ideas seem to be off the table.

What this likely means for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is a more subtle evolution. The selfie camera stays in the centre, while the Face ID remains visible, but with a smaller cutout. The Dynamic Island also sticks around, largely unchanged.

That outcome will probably suit most users. The Dynamic Island has become a familiar part of iOS, and shrinking it without breaking app behaviour is a safer move than removing it entirely.

Apple may still be inching toward its all-screen future, just not with the iPhone 18 Pro.
