We might’ve only just got the Apple M5, but the M6 could be here very soon

Apple only started rolling out its first M5-powered devices three months ago. However, a new report suggests the company’s next chip generation might already be closer than expected.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinted that the M6 chip could arrive “in the near future” — even if it doesn’t debut inside the next wave of MacBooks. While that makes talk of an M6 feel premature, recent history suggests otherwise.

There was only a five-month gap between the M3 and M4. That transition broke Apple’s usual pattern. Instead of launching first in a Mac, the M4 made its debut in the iPad Pro, catching even close industry watchers off guard. Gurman suggests the M6 could follow a similarly unconventional path.

What makes the timing especially curious is that high-end M5 versions of the MacBook Pro haven’t even launched yet. Gurman himself notes that the redesigned MacBook Pro — expected to feature OLED displays and a major chassis overhaul — isn’t due until late 2026. That puts a traditional M6 MacBook launch well into the future, at least on paper.

Still, recent reports have hinted that some M6 hardware could be ahead of schedule. This raises questions about where Apple might introduce the chip first. If it doesn’t land in a MacBook, it could mirror the M4 strategy and appear in a different product category entirely.

For now, it’s all speculation, but Gurman’s wording is telling. Apple isn’t known for accelerating chip cycles without a reason. If the M6 really is coming sooner than expected, it suggests another shift in how Apple rolls out its silicon roadmap.

In other words, we might still be getting used to the M5, but Apple could already be gearing up for what comes next.
