If your PlayStation 3 is still pulling streaming duty in your living room, there’s a deadline you’ll want to note.
Netflix will stop working on the PS3 on March 2, 2026, bringing a quiet end to one of the longest-running streaming apps on a games console.
Fire up Netflix on PS3 units, and you’ll see a message confirming that the app “will no longer be available on this device” after that date. That brings the curtain down on 16 years of support. Honestly, that is impressive for a console that launched back in 2006.
Netflix first arrived on the PS3 in 2009 via a physical Blu-ray disc. It became a native app a year later. Since then, it’s somehow hung on through multiple console generations, operating systems, and streaming revolutions. This is long after most people assumed it had disappeared.
For the small but vocal group still using a PS3 for Netflix, the news has landed with a mix of disappointment and surprise. Some users on Reddit pointed out that the PS3 remains one of the few easy ways to watch Netflix content natively in 4:3 on a CRT. This makes it ideal for older shows without black bars. Others admitted they had no idea the app was still supported at all.
Netflix hasn’t given a specific reason for the shutdown, but it’s likely down to ageing hardware and the increasing difficulty of maintaining apps on nearly 20-year-old platforms. Support for legacy devices has been shrinking across the streaming industry. The PS3 was always living on borrowed time.
Interestingly, Amazon Prime Video still works on the PS3, for now. With Netflix stepping away, it raises the question of how much longer other streaming services will continue to support Sony’s older console.
If you’re still relying on a PS3 for Netflix, you’ve got a few weeks left. After that, it’ll finally be time to retire it from streaming duty — even if it’s had a longer run than anyone expected.
