Sleep technology company NextSense has launched SmartBuds, a new pair of wireless earbuds that use built-in EEG sensors to measure brain activity and deliver audio designed to improve sleep quality.
NextSense describes SmartBuds as the first truly wireless earbuds to integrate electroencephalogram (EEG) sensing, bringing a medical-grade monitoring technique to a consumer sleep wearable.
EEG technology records electrical activity in the brain and is typically used in clinical settings through sensors placed on the scalp to analyse sleep stages and neurological patterns.
By embedding six EEG sensors into each earbud, NextSense aims to capture brain signals directly from the ear, allowing continuous monitoring without external headgear or wired equipment.
How the SmartBuds work
The earbuds track brain activity throughout the night to identify sleep stages such as light sleep, deep sleep, and REM, using those signals to adjust audio playback in real time.
Based on the detected sleep stage, SmartBuds play precisely timed sounds intended to nudge the brain toward deeper, more restorative sleep rather than simply masking external noise.
NextSense says the system adapts over time by learning individual sleep patterns, allowing the earbuds to tailor their responses more closely to each user’s nightly rhythms.
The SmartBuds resemble other sleep-focused earbuds, particularly the Soundcore Sleep A30, with a compact design, a charging case, and soft silicone construction intended for overnight comfort.
NextSense uses conductive silicone for the ear tips and wings to maintain consistent contact for EEG sensing, while keeping the earbuds flexible enough for side sleepers.
Each earbud weighs five grams and ships with multiple tips and wing sizes to accommodate different ear shapes and sleeping positions.
Beyond EEG-driven audio, the earbuds also support playback from personal music libraries, audiobooks, and white noise, allowing them to function as standard sleep earbuds.
Battery life is rated at up to nine hours of on-device audio, with the charging case providing up to four additional full charges.
Availability and pricing
NextSense currently sells the SmartBuds exclusively in the US and targets them as a premium sleep wearable.
The earbuds carry a retail price of $399.99, though NextSense is offering a limited-time pre-order price of $249.
The company also offers an optional Fit Kit subscription, priced at $14.99 per month, which provides regular replacement ear tips to maintain comfort and sensor performance.
NextSense has not yet announced plans to expand SmartBuds availability beyond the US.
