YouTube is following Spotify in adding AI playlist creation

Google is rolling out a new AI Playlist feature in YouTube Music that allows Premium subscribers to generate playlists using simple text or voice prompts.

The feature lets users describe an idea, mood, or genre, with YouTube Music then creating a curated playlist based on that request.

Google says users can access AI Playlist by tapping the “New” button in the Library tab on Android or iOS and selecting the AI Playlist option.

From there, users can enter a written prompt or use voice input to explain the type of music they want included.

The approach mirrors Spotify’s recently introduced text-based playlist generation tool, which similarly builds playlists from open-ended prompts.

How AI Playlist fits into YouTube Music

Google has not provided detailed information on how many tracks AI Playlist generates or whether users can edit prompts after the playlist is created.

Spotify’s equivalent feature allows users to refine their prompts and refresh playlists over time, though Google has not confirmed if YouTube Music will support similar adjustments.

YouTube Music previously introduced an AI Radio feature, which also uses prompt-based inputs to generate a continuous stream of music.

AI Playlist appears to build on that foundation, shifting from dynamic radio streams to fixed playlists that users can save to their libraries.

The feature is currently limited to YouTube Music Premium subscribers, reinforcing Google’s strategy of placing new AI-driven tools behind a paywall.

The move follows YouTube’s recent decision to place lyrics behind a Premium paywall which suggests the company is steadily moving popular functionality into its Premium subscription model.

YouTube Music Premium costs £12.99/$10.99 per month and includes ad-free listening, background playback, and offline downloads.

Google recently reported more than 325 million paid subscriptions across its consumer services, with YouTube Premium and related offerings contributing significantly to revenue growth.

The company has not outlined a global rollout timeline, though the feature is now appearing for some users on Android and iOS.

Google has also not confirmed whether AI Playlist will expand to free users in a limited form or remain exclusive to Premium tiers.

By adding AI Playlist, YouTube Music joins a growing number of streaming platforms experimenting with generative tools to personalise music discovery through conversational inputs.
