The Leitzphone could be the camera phone we’ve all been dreaming of

Leica’s Leitzphone is finally going global – and for photography fans, that’s a big deal.

Previously limited to Japan, the latest version will now be available internationally. However, it is notably not in the US, which is set to miss out on what looks like one of the best camera phones yet.

Built in partnership with Xiaomi, the Leitzphone shares much of its hardware DNA with Xiaomi’s latest Ultra flagship. This means serious imaging credentials. These are headlined by a 50MP 1-inch main sensor with LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology designed to reduce highlight clipping and improve dynamic range. In simpler terms, it aims to deliver more natural-looking photos. It does this with less reliance on aggressive HDR processing.

But it’s the physical design that sets this phone apart. Leica has added a mechanical control ring around the camera module — a genuinely tactile way to adjust settings like zoom, exposure compensation, or white balance. By default, the ring controls zoom (the 200MP telephoto lens offers 3x–4x optical zoom). However, it can be reassigned depending on how you shoot. It’s a small detail, but one that feels built specifically for photographers rather than casual snappers.

The Leitzphone also supports Xiaomi’s optional camera grip accessory, further leaning into that compact-camera experience. Add Leica-inspired colour science, profiles modelled after cameras like the Leica M9, and even a black-and-white mode inspired by Leica’s Monopan 50 film. It’s clear this isn’t just another co-branded handset.

Outside the camera system, it ticks flagship boxes: a 6.9-inch 3500-nit display, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, and a sizeable 6,000mAh battery. Leica has even included a dedicated security chip for embedding content credentials into images. This is a move aimed at image authentication in an AI-heavy era.

There’s only one configuration available, which is matte black with silver accents, priced at £1,700 (around $2,000). In the box, buyers get a lens cap, case, cleaning cloth, and red wrist strap. This leans fully into the Leica aesthetic.

At that price, it’s undeniably niche. But for photographers who’ve long wanted a phone that feels closer to a dedicated camera, both in hardware and philosophy, the Leitzphone might be the closest thing yet.
